Do G2 and Clutch Reviews Help AI Citation?.

G2 and Clutch reviews sit near the top of almost every AEO checklist published in 2026, filed next to schema markup and PR mentions as a cheap, obvious off-site signal. Our own measurement says the checklist overstates the effect by an order of magnitude: across 500 AI answers to 100 real buyer questions (SourceRank AI's tracked question set, run on 17 September 2026), the eight best known B2B review directories, G2, Clutch, Capterra, GoodFirms, DesignRush, Sortlist, Trustpilot and TrustRadius, were cited in 6 of them, 1.2%. Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube together appeared in 91, roughly fifteen times as often.
That gap is the finding this post is built around. It comes from SourceRank AI's own measurement platform, not a survey or an opinion, and it changes where a limited off-site AEO budget should go.
Do AI engines actually cite G2 and Clutch reviews when answering buyer questions?
Barely, on the evidence of this run. The eight named directories combined supplied 10 of the 1,969 links the five engines cited across the full dataset, 0.5% of all citations, and showed up in only 6 of 500 answers. Four of the eight, Capterra, Sortlist, Trustpilot and TrustRadius, were not cited a single time in any answer, on any engine, to any of the 100 questions. Widen the definition to include GetApp, a ninth directory our rule set also tracks, and the total moves to 7 of 500 answers, 1.4%, which is still a rounding error next to what else got cited.
| Directory | Links cited | Answers citing it | Questions it appeared on |
|---|---|---|---|
| G2 | 4 | 2 | 2 |
| DesignRush | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| Clutch | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| GoodFirms | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Capterra | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Sortlist | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Trustpilot | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| TrustRadius | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| All eight combined | 10 | 6 | 5 |
Figures are from one full run of our 100-question tracked set across ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, counted at the registrable domain. Full method and the raw SQL are on the source research page.
What did get cited instead of review directories?
Vendor and agency websites, by a wide margin, then Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube. Vendor and agency sites supplied 1,684 of the 1,969 cited links, 85.5%, and appeared in 367 of 500 answers, 73.4%. Reddit alone was the single most cited domain in the entire run, appearing in 40 of the 500 answers across 32 of the 100 questions, more than six times the combined total of all eight review directories. Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube together reached 91 of 500 answers, 18.2%. When an engine needed a second opinion beyond a vendor's own site, it reached for a community thread or a social post before it reached for a review platform built to hold exactly that kind of second opinion.
Why would AI engines skip review directories that exist to answer this exact question?
The most likely reason is structural, not a judgement on review quality. A G2 or Clutch profile page is a single static summary behind a template; a Reddit thread or a LinkedIn post is conversational text that already resembles the phrasing a buyer typed into the engine, and it is indexed far more frequently by the crawlers these five engines read from. An engine assembling an answer tends to lift language, not badges, and a review platform's star rating and category placement do not translate into quotable sentences the way a forum reply does. This is consistent with a separate finding from the same measurement programme: AI engines cite different kinds of sources by industry, and the kind they reach for second, after a vendor's own site, is rarely a curated directory.
Does this mean a G2 or Clutch profile is a waste of marketing budget?
No, but it means budgeting for one on the promise that it moves an AI citation rate is the wrong justification. A complete G2 or Clutch profile still reaches human buyers who browse those platforms directly, still feeds the reviews and comparison pages other sites quote, and still matters for conventional SEO and paid-channel retargeting. What this run says is narrower: on a straight count of what the five tracked engines cited when answering 100 real "who should I hire" questions, review directories were close to invisible. A team deciding between finishing a G2 profile and shipping a documentation page or a comparison article should expect the second two to move an AI citation rate far more, based on this data.
Does this result hold across every AI engine, or just on average?
The underlying measurement programme has shown engine-level splits are often sharper than category averages, and review directories are the kind of source most exposed to that. Microsoft Copilot returned a source list on every one of its 100 answers in this run, and across our ten-industry data it cited a vendor or agency site in 922 of 924 answers; Gemini returned no source list at all on its full 100 answers, which means a Gemini-heavy buyer base cannot be checked against this breakdown directly because the engine did not expose its sources. The honest read is that the 1.2% figure is an average across five engines with very different citation behaviour, and a company whose buyers lean on one specific engine should pull its own tracked-question run rather than apply the aggregate blind.
How does this compare to what other AI-visibility research says about G2?
Our own wider study points the same way with one exception worth knowing: across 22 B2B categories in October 2026, directory, review and analyst sites were cited in 111 of 814 answers that showed sources, 13.6%, concentrated in managed IT (Clutch) and in managed detection and response and field service software (Gartner) (who AI recommends). Packaged-software questions are a different question set from this one. This run asked 100 questions a buyer would type looking specifically for an AEO, GEO or AI visibility provider, a services category rather than a packaged-software category. Review directories may behave differently for software purchases than for hiring a services provider; this data speaks only to the second case, and that distinction matters more than the headline number on its own.
Where should the review-site budget go instead, based on this data?
- 1. Fund the vendor and agency page itself first. It drew 73.4% of all answers in this run; a weak version of your own site is the single biggest gap this data points to.
- 2. Treat Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube as genuine citation surfaces, not just brand channels. Together they outcited all eight review directories by roughly 15 to 1.
- 3. Keep one strong review profile for human buyers, not five thin ones for engines. Pick the platform your actual category already uses and finish it; do not spread effort across eight directories chasing an AI citation that this data says is unlikely regardless.
- 4. Check your own tracked questions before reallocating a real budget. This is an aggregate across five engines and 100 questions in one category; a baseline AI Visibility Audit, run as described in how it works, shows what your specific buyers' queries actually cite today.
- 5. Revisit the split on a schedule. Engine behaviour and the sources they favour shift between runs; SourceRank AI re-measures tracked accounts every six days for exactly this reason.
Our earlier comparison of B2B review platforms covers which directory to prioritise if a profile is still worth building for human buyers; this post is about whether that spend buys an AI citation, and on this data it mostly does not. The two questions have different answers, and conflating them is how an off-site budget ends up funding the wrong line item. A broader view of where off-site effort pays off across directories, PR, reviews and backlinks is in our off-site tactics comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Does G2 help you get cited by ChatGPT or Gemini?
Rarely, on this data. G2 was cited in 2 of 500 answers across the full five-engine run, and the combined total for all eight tracked review directories was 6 of 500, 1.2%.
Why were Capterra, Sortlist, Trustpilot and TrustRadius cited zero times?
The run does not say why, only that it happened: across 500 answers and five engines, none of the four returned a single citation. The most likely explanation is that engines favour conversational, text-heavy sources over templated directory pages when assembling an answer.
Is Reddit really a bigger AI citation source than G2 and Clutch reviews?
Yes, by a wide margin in this run. Reddit alone appeared in 40 of 500 answers; all eight review directories combined appeared in 6. Our separate piece on Reddit's citation volatility is worth reading alongside this, since Reddit's own citation rate is not stable either.
Should I cancel my G2 or Clutch subscription?
Not on this data alone. The finding is narrow: review directories rarely earned an AI citation in this specific question set. Human buyers, SEO value and lead capture are separate reasons to keep a profile, and this post does not address those.
Does this apply to every industry, not just AEO buyers?
This run measured one category, AEO and AI visibility providers. Our wider industry-by-industry measurement shows citation source mix varies enormously by category, so a different industry could show a different directory citation rate.
How was this measured?
A fixed set of 100 buyer questions was put to ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, and every cited source link was logged and categorised by domain kind. The full method and SQL are published on the research page.
What should replace review-directory spend in an AEO budget?
Based on this run, the vendor or agency website itself and genuine presence on Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube. A baseline AI visibility audit shows which of those gaps apply to a specific company before any budget moves.
Does SourceRank AI measure Perplexity as well?
No. SourceRank AI measures five engines, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, and every number in this post comes from those five and no others.
