What AI Engines Actually Cite When Buyers Ask Who To Hire
We put 100 real buyer questions to five AI answer engines and logged every source they cited. Review directories, the places B2B buyers are told to go for vendor shortlists, were cited in 6 of 500 answers. That is 1.2%.
One full measurement run of SourceRank AI's own tracked question set, taken on 17 September 2026, produced 500 answers and 1,969 cited links across 914 distinct domains. The eight best known B2B review directories, Clutch, G2, Capterra, GoodFirms, DesignRush, Sortlist, Trustpilot and TrustRadius, accounted for 10 of those 1,969 links and appeared in 6 of the 500 answers, 1.2%. Four of the eight, Capterra, Sortlist, Trustpilot and TrustRadius, were never cited at all. Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube together appeared in 91 answers, 18.2%, roughly fifteen times as often. The answers were built overwhelmingly out of vendor and agency websites, which supplied 85.5% of all cited links. If you are spending money to be visible where AI engines look when a buyer asks who to hire, this run says the directory listing is not where they are looking.
Review directories: 6 of 500 answers, 1.2%. Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube: 91 of 500 answers, 18.2%.
Exactly what was measured
Every number on this page is computed in SQL directly against the stored snapshot for a single run. The SQL is printed in full at the end of the page source so anyone can reproduce it.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Run id | c181e16b-6c49-4712-83ef-551fa7d42744 |
| Run date | 17 September 2026 |
| Account | SourceRank AI's own tracked question set |
| Questions | 100 |
| Answer engines | 5: ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews |
| Answers | 500, every question against every engine |
| Answers excluded as no-answer | 0. No engine failed to answer in this run |
| Answers with at least one source captured | 380 of 500, 76.0% |
| Cited links counted | 1,969 |
| Distinct domains | 914, counted at the registrable domain so subdomains roll up |
| Link exclusions | google.com search result links and bing.com redirect links are stripped before counting. Neither appeared in this run, so the rule removed nothing |
| Unit of the headline share | an answer, meaning one question on one engine. Denominator 500 |
A no-answer is an engine returning no answer text for a question. We exclude those before counting, because an engine that did not answer cannot have cited anything. In this run there were none, so the exclusion changed nothing. Answers that returned text but no source list are kept and counted, and section 06 reports them.
The question set is our own: 100 questions a buyer would actually type when looking for an AEO, GEO or AI visibility provider, spread across nine segments. Two shares get reported for most figures. Share of answers uses a denominator of 500, one question on one engine. Share of cited links uses a denominator of 1,969, every individual source link the engines returned.

Not one review directory appears in the top 25. Our own domain, sourcerankai.com, sits at 21 with 8 answers; we report it rather than quietly dropping it, because this is our own question set and we are one of the vendors the engines are choosing between.
Grouped by kind
Every one of the 914 domains is assigned to exactly one kind by an explicit named rule, so the six rows below add up to 1,969 links. Answers can cite more than one kind, so the answer column does not add to 500.
| Kind | Domains | Links | Share of 1,969 links | Answers | Share of 500 answers | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor or agency site | 887 | 1684 | 85.5% | 367 | 73.4% | 100 |
| Social and video | 4 | 85 | 4.3% | 67 | 13.4% | 47 |
| Community | 3 | 60 | 3.0% | 44 | 8.8% | 34 |
| Docs and standards | 11 | 102 | 5.2% | 40 | 8.0% | 33 |
| News | 4 | 27 | 1.4% | 20 | 4.0% | 15 |
| Review directory | 5 | 11 | 0.6% | 7 | 1.4% | 6 |
Community is Reddit, Quora and forum platforms. Social and video is LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook and Medium. Review directory is the nine sites listed in section 03. News is Yahoo, Forbes, Search Engine Land and PR Newswire. Docs and standards is Google developer and support documentation, schema.org, OpenAI documentation, arXiv and government domains. Vendor or agency site is the residual: 887 commercial sites belonging to agencies, tools and software vendors.
The number worth quoting
| Directory | Links | Answers | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| g2.com | 4 | 2 | 2 |
| designrush.com | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| clutch.co | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| goodfirms.co | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| capterra.com | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| sortlist.com | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| trustpilot.com | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| trustradius.com | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| All eight combined | 10 | 6 | 5 |
Counted at the registrable domain, so content subdomains such as learn.g2.com and news.designrush.com roll into their parent. One further directory, getapp.com, was cited once; on a wider definition that includes it the total becomes 11 links and 7 answers, 1.4%.
Against a denominator of 500 answers, the eight named directories are 1.2%. Against a denominator of 1,969 cited links, they are 0.5%. Capterra, Sortlist, Trustpilot and TrustRadius were not cited a single time in any of the 500 answers.
This does not mean directory profiles are worthless. They still get human traffic, and a profile can feed the reviews and third party mentions an engine reads elsewhere. It does mean that on this question set, on this date, an AI answer engine deciding who to recommend almost never reached for one. Our own read of what actually earns the citation is on the AEO agency comparison.
Where the engines went instead
| Domain | Links | Share of 1,969 links | Answers | Share of 500 answers | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| reddit.com | 54 | 2.7% | 40 | 8.0% | 32 |
| youtube.com | 42 | 2.1% | 32 | 6.4% | 26 |
| linkedin.com | 37 | 1.9% | 32 | 6.4% | 24 |
| All three combined | 133 | 6.8% | 91 | 18.2% | 60 |
The combined row counts each answer once even when it cited two of the three, which is why 91 is less than 40 plus 32 plus 32.
Three consumer platforms were cited in 91 of 500 answers and touched 60 of the 100 questions. Reddit alone was the single most cited domain in the entire run. An engine synthesising a hiring recommendation is reading what people said in public, on a forum, on a profile, on video, far more than it is reading a structured vendor listing.
There is no short list of sources to win
914 domains
Distinct registrable domains supplying the 1,969 cited links, an average of 2.2 links each.
133 domains
How many it takes, ranked by link count, to account for the first 50% of all cited links. That is 14.6% of the domains cited.
608 domains
Cited exactly once across the whole run, 66.5% of every domain that appeared at all.
Half the citations come from 133 different places. Two thirds of the domains that got cited got cited once and never again. That shape argues against any strategy built on placing yourself on a handful of high authority pages, and in favour of being consistently citable across a wide surface, because there is no small set of sources to buy your way onto.
A quarter of answers came back with no sources at all
| Engine | Answers | No sources captured | Links captured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 100 | 100 | 0 |
| ChatGPT | 100 | 17 | 415 |
| Google AI Overviews | 100 | 2 | 565 |
| Google AI Mode | 100 | 1 | 389 |
| Microsoft Copilot | 100 | 0 | 600 |
| All five | 500 | 120 | 1,969 |
120 of 500 answers, 24.0%, carried no source list. Gemini accounts for 100 of those: in this run it answered every question and attached a source list to none of them. That is a property of what the engine exposes and what our collector could capture on the day, not evidence that Gemini invented its answers.
This matters for anyone quoting a single run, including us. Every domain share on this page is computed over the 380 answers that did carry sources, then expressed against the full 500 so the reader can see the real denominator. A vendor who quietly drops the sourceless answers from the denominator will report the same run with materially higher shares. If an AI visibility statistic does not tell you how many of its answers had no sources, you cannot tell which denominator it used, and the number is not checkable.
The most cited kind in each vertical
The 100 questions carry a segment label. This is the same classification as section 02, cut by segment and ranked by links within that segment.
| Segment | Questions | Links | Most cited kind | Its share of segment links | Runner up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| General AEO buying general | 28 | 568 | Vendor or agency site | 85.9% | Community, 6.5% |
| B2B SaaS b2b-saas | 13 | 244 | Vendor or agency site | 82.8% | Social and video, 7.4% |
| Professional services professional-services | 10 | 213 | Vendor or agency site | 86.4% | Docs and standards, 8.0% |
| Financial services financial-services | 9 | 188 | Vendor or agency site | 90.4% | Docs and standards, 4.8% |
| Healthtech healthtech | 9 | 158 | Vendor or agency site | 81.0% | Docs and standards, 8.9% |
| Logistics logistics | 8 | 165 | Vendor or agency site | 89.1% | Docs and standards, 5.5% |
| Manufacturing manufacturing | 8 | 166 | Vendor or agency site | 84.3% | Docs and standards, 9.0% |
| Home and commercial services home-commercial-services | 8 | 150 | Vendor or agency site | 80.0% | Docs and standards, 10.0% |
| Agencies agencies | 7 | 117 | Vendor or agency site | 89.7% | Community, 4.3% |
In the agencies segment, community and social and video tied on 5 links each; community is shown as runner up. Segment link counts sum to 1,969 and segment question counts sum to 100.
Vendor and agency sites are the most cited kind in all nine segments, never below 80% of that segment's links. What moves is second place. In the general and agencies segments it is community, meaning Reddit. In B2B SaaS it is social and video. In the six remaining verticals, including financial services, healthtech, manufacturing and logistics, second place is documentation and standards: Google's own developer docs, schema.org, government sources. In a regulated or technical vertical the engine reaches for a specification, not a forum post. We have since run the same cut across ten companies in ten different industries, where the swing is far larger than it is between segments of one question set: the source mix by industry.
What this does not tell you
- +This is one run. One date, 17 September 2026. Citation sets move between runs even when nothing on the web changed. A single run is a photograph, not a trend, and nobody should treat these shares as stable constants.
- +This is our own question set. 100 questions we chose, about hiring an AEO or AI visibility provider. A different set, phrased differently, would return a different source mix.
- +This is our category only. These are questions about buying AEO and AI visibility services. It says nothing about what engines cite when a buyer asks about industrial pumps, tax software or a cardiology clinic.
- +It measures sources, not sales. Being cited is not the same as being chosen. This page counts what the engine reached for, not what the buyer did next.
- +Sourceless answers are real. 120 of 500 answers carried no source list, 100 of them from Gemini. Every share here is computed over the 380 that did and reported against 500.
- +Domain kind is a judgement. The classification is an explicit named rule set, printed in the SQL at the end of this page's source, and the residual kind is vendor or agency site. Reasonable people would bin a handful of the 914 domains differently.
We re-measure this question set every 6 days. This page is refreshed in place on the same URL with each new run date, so the URL stays stable and the numbers stay current rather than freezing on the day we first published them. If a figure here is being quoted, quote it with the run date attached.
- +Review directories were cited in 6 of 500 answers, 1.2%, and in 10 of 1,969 links, 0.5%. Capterra, Sortlist, Trustpilot and TrustRadius were never cited.
- +Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube were cited in 91 of 500 answers, 18.2%, touching 60 of the 100 questions. Reddit was the single most cited domain.
- +Vendor and agency websites supplied 1,684 of 1,969 links, 85.5%, and were the most cited kind in all nine segments.
- +Citations are long tailed: 914 domains, 133 needed to reach the first half of all links, 608 cited exactly once.
- +120 of 500 answers carried no source list, 100 of them from Gemini, which is why the denominator has to be published alongside any AI citation statistic.

Common questions
Do AI engines rely on review directories like Clutch and G2 to answer hiring questions?
Not in this run. Across 500 answers, the eight best known B2B review directories were cited in 6 answers, 1.2% of the total. Capterra, Sortlist, Trustpilot and TrustRadius were not cited once. Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube together were cited in 91 answers, 18.2%.
What did AI engines cite most when asked who to hire?
Vendor and agency websites. They supplied 1,684 of the 1,969 cited links, 85.5%, and appeared in 367 of 500 answers, 73.4%. The single most cited domain was reddit.com, in 40 answers across 32 of the 100 questions.
How concentrated are AI citations across domains?
They are not concentrated at the top and they are very long tailed. 914 distinct domains supplied the 1,969 links. It takes 133 of them, 14.6% of all domains cited, to account for the first half of the links, and 608 domains, 66.5%, were cited exactly once.
How many AI answers came back with no sources at all?
120 of 500, 24.0%. Gemini returned no source list on all 100 of its answers in this run, ChatGPT on 17, Google AI Overviews on 2 and Google AI Mode on 1. Microsoft Copilot returned sources on every answer.
Which AI engines does SourceRank AI measure?
Five: ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Every number on this page comes from those five engines and no others.
