Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

Closer than most vendors selling AEO will admit, and not the same thing. The work overlaps heavily. What changed is the scoreboard, and that is the part worth understanding before you pay anyone.

The short answer

SEO asks whether you rank in a list of links. AEO asks whether you are the name inside the answer. Much of the underlying work is shared, because the things that make a page liftable by an AI assistant are the things that have made pages rank for years: an unambiguous entity, content that answers a specific question in a passage that can be quoted, and other people's pages citing you.

What is genuinely different is the outcome. A search result is a link you still have to earn trust through. A named answer arrives with the assistant's recommendation already attached.

The test that separates real AEO work from a dashboard

If your AEO work is not also improving your organic numbers, you are not buying AEO. You are buying a dashboard.

That is not a slogan, it follows from how the answers are built. When we measured 100 unbranded buying questions across five engines, the engines cited 2,694 links to answer them. The overwhelming majority were third-party pages: roundup articles, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn. Earning a place on those pages is off-site authority work, and off-site authority moves organic rankings too. There is no version of genuinely moving AI answers that leaves search untouched.

So a provider whose work shows up in a prompt-tracking dashboard and nowhere else has done the measuring and skipped the work.

Four questions to ask any provider, including us

  • Which engines do you track, and how many questions? Single-engine checking understates the opportunity badly. On one account baseline ChatGPT named a provider in 22% of answers where Google's AI Mode did in 44%.
  • How much does a number move between runs on an identical question set? If they cannot answer this they are not measuring, they are screenshotting. We have seen an identical set move by a point in three days.
  • What share of my buying questions return any vendor at all? On a real share of questions every engine answers with a do-it-yourself walkthrough and names nobody. Nobody wins those, and averaging them in makes any score meaningless.
  • What will you actually do off-site? That is where the citations come from and it is the hard part. If the answer is vague, the programme is a report.

Common questions

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

No, but it is closer to SEO than most vendors selling it will admit. The work overlaps heavily: entity clarity, answer-shaped content and third-party citations move both. What changed is the scoreboard. SEO asks whether you rank in a list of links that a person then has to click and evaluate. AEO asks whether you are the name inside the answer, which arrives with the assistant's implicit recommendation attached. Same discipline in many places, different thing being won.

If I already do SEO, do I need AEO as well?

It depends on whether your buyers' questions return a provider. On a meaningful share of buying questions every engine answers with a do-it-yourself walkthrough and names nobody, and nobody can win those. On the rest, being the named answer is a different outcome from ranking third. Measure before you buy anything: find out what share of your buying questions name any vendor at all, and who is named instead of you today.

Does AEO work also improve SEO?

Yes, and if it does not, that is the clearest sign you are buying something cosmetic. The things that move AI answers are the same things that have moved organic for years: an unambiguous entity, content structured so a specific question is answered in a liftable passage, and other people's pages citing you. A provider whose AEO work leaves your organic numbers flat is almost certainly selling prompt screenshots and a dashboard.

Can my existing SEO agency just do AEO?

Some can. The honest test is not whether they say yes, it is whether they measure. Ask which engines they track, how many questions, how often they re-run the same set, and how much a number moves between runs on an identical question set. An agency that cannot answer the last one is not measuring, it is screenshotting. The second test is off-site: AI answers lean heavily on third-party pages, so ask what they will actually do to get you named on other people's sites.

So why optimise for AEO rather than SEO?

Because of what arrives at the other end. A visitor from a search result has clicked a link and still has to decide whether to trust you. Someone who arrives because an assistant recommended them by name has been vouched for before they reach your site. We are not publishing a conversion multiple on that yet, because we would rather measure it than assert it, but the mechanism is why the work is worth doing in that order.

Is AEO a fad that will be absorbed back into SEO?

Possibly, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. The acronym may not survive; the category names in this space are still unsettled. What will not reverse is that a growing share of buying questions get answered without a list of links, and that being the named answer is worth more than being the fourth result. Whatever it ends up being called, that is the thing to optimise for.
